TRADE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Calling on HVAC Installers
Plumbers and
Electricians
Would you join with the Operation Rebound team providing a week of your professional skills and experience to help us install the HVAC ( Air conditioning system and Heat Pump) Electrical Service and inside rough as well as Plumbing for two single story double bath homes??

Where: Gulfport, Mississippi

Who are we you ask?
Operation Rebound is a faith based effort begun by South Shore Baptist Church
of Hingham and quickly joined by other local churches (4), businesses and neighbors as our joint response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. You may have read articles about Operation Rebound; last February volunteers of Operation Rebound got together at the former Naval Base in South Weymouth to prefab the wall frames to 5 single story homes. When finished those walls were then transported down to the Gulf Coast by truck.

A few weeks later in March two homes were constructed by 45 Operation Rebound volunteers and in April another home by 30 volunteers. Each of us saw first hand some of the devastation the hurricane has wrecked on Louisiana and Mississippi. We saw what the locals in the area are describing as Mississippi’s “Ground Zero.” We saw the effects of a 30 foot wall of water traveling inland at high speed. It has left as an aftermath that will take years to rebuild.

The goal of rebuilding Katrina’s Ground Zero South is a monumental task that no government can possible achieve alone. Nor can the people from the region, who have lost everything and have for the past 10 months been living in trailer parks, stadiums, F.E.M.A. trailers and in temporary subsidized housing. These folks can’t wait for the government or the insurance industry to rebuild for them. The job then falls to their fellow countrymen who see that their need is so great and response thus far, too slow.
Acting right now is the only proper response.

Builders Return Home (for a time) but MORE SUPPORT is needed

Twenty two south shore builders and laborers (men and women) returned home this weekend from Gulfport, MS. Although there is still MUCH to be done, they were in great spirits. They had been joined in the building project by 19 men from Philadelphia and nine men and women from Wisconsin. Due to the fact that two houses had to be demolished (demo'd) and the debris removed and two foundations had to be dug (one by hand) and poured, the 12 hour work days throughout the week yielded two weatherized house structures (thanks to all our donors).
Three trailers remain on site storing the wall frames built in South Weymouth (3 weeks ago)for the three additional homes. The homes' foundations still need to be completed, and all five homes will require further inside finish work. Another trip is now planned for Easter week (April 14-22).

YOUR SUPPORT would be greatly appreciated.
Funds will go to finish the homes and sponsor builders' travel to Gulfport, MS.
Appliances are needed, as are rugs, flooring or tile.
More BUILDERS are needed - carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc. Dry wallers, painters too!
Those just returning from Gulfport this weekend indicate they want to go back. One roofer who just returned was asked what he would say to those who are thinking of going in the future? His answer was: "It's one of the greatest experiences." The opportunity to give to those in such need and yet so obviously appreciative, is very heart warming indeed.

Construction Underway!!!

The house frames arrived in MS last week by truck, and our team is currently working on three houses, each in different stages.
On Sunday, most of the team worked on manually demolishing the old house on the second site with sledgehammer and crowbars. The first house is coming along well, it now has interior walls, exterior walls, and windows.
Today is another beautiful day in MS! One foundation is all set, and our mason is laying cinder blocks at the second sight. The third sight is coming along with the foundation being dug (with a machine this time) early this morning. The cement truck came at 10, so now we are praying the slab will dry quickly so the blocks can be layed this afternoon.
WB TV will continue their nightly coverage of Operation Rebound, on the 10pm news.
Our reporter, is particularly excited about the show tonight, on which he interviews one of the widows who will be receiving a house!
